Can you identify biobased textiles when shopping?

Posted on May 7, 2024

When shopping for textiles, you can identify biobased textiles by considering the following methods:

Certification Labels:

  • Look for certification labels that verify the bio-based content of products. These labels ensure that the textile contains bio-based material.
  • Here are three leading certification labels:

DIN CERTCO:

This label is based on the European Standard EN 16785-1 and is recognized internationally. It applies to various products, including textiles. The label provides three different categories based on the percentage of bio-based content:

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Bio Preferred Program:

This government-led initiative promotes the use of bio-based products. It includes third-party testing based on the ASTM D6866 standard to award a certification label. The program supports agricultural sectors by creating new markets for agricultural products and residues.

TÜV AUSTRIA’s OK biobased certification:

This program evaluates and rates the bio-based content of products on a scale from one to four stars:

Natural Fiber Types:

Consider textiles made from natural fibers, such as:

Innovative Biobased Fibers:

  • Keep an eye out for innovative biobased fibers like Sorona. Fabrics made with Sorona fibers offer a partially bio-based option with a lower environmental footprint.
