What is Nanocellulose?

Nanocellulose is a term that refers to cellulose in the form of very small particles or fibers. It can be obtained from various sources, such as plants, trees, or bacteria. Nanocellulose has many potential applications in different fields, such as nanocomposites, emulsions, adhesives, wastewater treatment, and biomedicine. Nanocellulose has several advantages, such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, high mechanical strength, and optical properties.

There are three types of nanocellulose that are commercially available: cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), cellulose nanofibers (CNF), and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). These types vary in size, shape, crystallinity, and production methods. CNCs are rod-like particles that have high crystallinity and surface charge. CNFs are long and flexible fibers that have low crystallinity and high aspect ratio. BNCs are network-like structures that are produced by bacteria and have high purity and water-holding capacity.

Some of the applications of nanocellulose are:

  • Nanocomposites: Nanocellulose can be used as a reinforcing agent in polymer matrices to improve their mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties. Nanocellulose can also enhance the biodegradability and biocompatibility of composites.
  • Emulsions: Nanocellulose can act as a stabilizer for oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions. Nanocellulose can also modify the rheological and optical properties of the emulsions.
  • Adhesives: Nanocellulose can be used as a binder or a filler in wood adhesives. Nanocellulose can improve the adhesion strength, water resistance, and durability of the adhesives.
  • Wastewater treatment: Nanocellulose can be used as an adsorbent or a flocculant for the removal of pollutants, such as heavy metals, dyes, and organic compounds, from wastewater. Nanocellulose can also be functionalized with various groups to enhance its adsorption capacity and selectivity.
  • Biomedicine: Nanocellulose can be used as a scaffold, a carrier, a dressing, or a sensor in biomedical applications. Nanocellulose can support the growth and differentiation of cells, deliver drugs or genes, heal wounds, or monitor physiological parameters.
